Mikonsaari

Pleasant day trip destination

Mikonsaari is located off Lappeenranta, but it is about 10 km by land from the city centre. It is a good day trip destination. Mikonsaari has a nature trail, which starts from the parking area on the right side of Mikonsaarentie. The trail is marked with red paint markers and signposts. If you walk counter-clockwise around the trail, you first walk along the forest road to the Niemisenselkä coastline. Pretty soon you come to the shore, where you will find a fireplace and a shelter on the cliffs, where you can take a picnic break. As you continue, you will reach a lookout point with a bench for resting. On the Mikonsaari nature trail you can observe the variation of habitats in a small area. The path leads through a mature coniferous forest into a moist grove. The high lichen-covered cliffs offer a magnificent view of the western archipelago of the Small Lake archipelago.

The City of Lappeenranta has opened a free boat rental service for crossing Pappilansalmi in September 2021. The approximately 150-metre-long rowing boat connection between Pappilanniemi and Pienen Lamposaari connects the western and the eastern shore route.

The crossing will also expand the cycling network in the area, as it will open up a new route not only to the coastal tracks but also to the nature trails of Pappilanniemi and Mikonsaari and the Taipalsaari scenic route. Three rowing boats are available for hire at the end of Isännöitsijäntien at the site of the former Pappilansalmi castle. They can be used free of charge via the electronic booking system. The boats are intended for crossing the Pappilansalmi only. For more information and booking instructions click here.
