Geocaching at Saimaa

The Lappeenranta and Imatra region offers excellent possibilities for geocaching. Geocaching is a whole family adventure, a treasure hunt of a kind where you must find caches in form of boxes or trays, hidden in the ground. There are more than 1500 caches in the Lappeenranta and Imatra region, that way one does not run out of treasures to find. It is possible that there is a stash right next to you, but you just do not know it yet.

Anyone can start geocaching by registering to www.geocaching.com webpage. The main advantage of geocaching is that there are no limitations or fees of any kind. The description of every cache can be found on the webpage above.

There are several types of caches; a basic stash, a multistash that requires going through several locations, a mystery cache containing puzzle tasks and caches located in geologically interesting landscapes. Thus South Karelian's beautiful landscapes add their own thrill to geocaching.

All you need for equipment is a smartphone to which you can download a geocaching app.

How to get started

  1. Register as a geocacher at www.geocaching.com.

  2. Use either geocaching.com webpage or smartphone's geocaching app to find a cache.

  3. Tell a friend by writing your initials and date on caches logbook and online if you wish.
