Orrainpolku trail
Experience the magnificent view over Lake Kuolimo from Luotolahti hill
In the heart of Savitaipale, amidst the stunning landscapes of South Karelia, lies one of the region’s most captivating hiking trails – Orrainpolku. This approximately ten-kilometer-long route offers nature enthusiasts a diverse range of scenery, challenging ascents, and breathtaking views. The trail winds through the isthmus between lakes Kuolimo and Saimaa, where ancient pine forests give way to lush mixed woodlands and serene marshlands. One of the highlights of the route is the climb to Luotolahdenvuori, which rewards hikers with magnificent panoramic views over Lake Kuolimo.
The trail is clearly marked with red paint symbols, and information boards along the way provide insights into the area's history and ecosystem. Hikers can take a break at one of the two scenic lean-tos, Onkilampi and Luotolahdenkapia, both equipped with fire pits and dry toilets. The Luotolahdenkapia lean-to sits right on the shores of Lake Kuolimo, inviting visitors for a refreshing swim in its clear waters, while the Onkilampi lean-to is easily accessible from Partakoskentie, making it an ideal stop for families and individuals with limited mobility. Due to its varying terrain, which includes steep ascents and descents, sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are highly recommended. The trail is also part of the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark, highlighting its significance as a unique geological and natural heritage site.
Offering a perfect blend of physical activity and stunning natural beauty, Orrainpolku provides an unforgettable hiking experience. Whether you are an experienced trekker or a first-time explorer, the trail’s diverse landscapes, peaceful surroundings, and spectacular views make it a must-visit destination.
