Saimaa Canal Route to Nuijamaa

The Saimaa Canal Cycle Route to Nuijamaa runs along the shore of the Saimaa Canal. During the bike ride, watch the boats go through the lock and return to the city through rural landscapes. The route is on asphalt and gravel roads.

The Saimaa Canal route runs between the new and old canals. You can therefore explore both the old canal, opened in 1856, and the present canal. The cycle route starts at the Saimaa Canal Museum, where you can start by visiting an exhibition on the different phases of the canal and the nearby old canal sluice. The route includes a self-operated cable ferry, which crosses the old canal near Nuijamaa church village.
