South Karelia Museum

History of South Karelia from the Middle Ages to this day

The South Karelia Museum is located in former artillery storehouses built in the early 19th century of massive grey stone at the northern tip of the Lappeenranta Fortress. Unlike the neoclassical brick barracks in the area, these buildings are made of local limestone.

The foundations of the collections of the museum are in the collections of the Lappeenranta, Vyborg and Käkisalmi museums. The new basic exhibition - The Story of South Karelia, will be realised in stages at the Museum of South Karelia. The restored miniature model of Viipuri, the exhibition section on the life of Finnish Viipuri and the Pusukioski kiosk are the first parts of the museum's new basic exhibition to be opened. The exhibition will be completed by the end of 2023.
