Ylamaa Mystique Oy creates unforgettable experiences at the meeting point of nature, craftsmanship, and mystique. On Mystique excursions, you are not just a spectator—you get to experience, search, discover, and create for yourself. You will learn about the origin and mining of Finland’s gemstone, spectrolite, and search with your own hands for a treasure shimmering in the colors of the rainbow. This is a journey from which you return with more than just memories—you return with a treasure shaped by your own hands.
At the heart of the experience lies the world’s largest spectrolite quarry, a destination worth seeing in its own right. The site features a lean-to shelter and a campfire area, and upon request we can arrange a meal or serve traditional campfire coffee in the midst of nature. A water pool in the center of the quarry adds to the calm, almost magical atmosphere. Yet the most important part is the discovery itself: you will search for your own spectrolite gemstone and learn about its formation and extraction. Once you have found your treasure, the journey continues to the workshop in the center of Ylämaa, where you shape your stone into a unique piece of jewelry for yourself or a loved one.
Spectrolite
Spectrolite is a rare Finnish gemstone found in high quality only in Ylämaa. It was discovered in the 1940s during the construction of the Salpa Line, and since then it has been renowned for its exceptionally vivid play of colors. The stone’s structure—nature’s own artwork composed of thin layers—creates a shimmering spectrum that changes as the stone is turned. This is what makes spectrolite so highly valued both in Finland and internationally. Most often it is crafted into beautiful jewelry, but it is also used for decorative and functional objects.
Ylamaa Mystique offers a variety of experiences, each combining nature, history, and craftsmanship. You can choose the more extensive “from stone to jewelry” experience, where you search the quarry for your own rainbow treasure and craft it into a finished piece of jewelry. On the shorter treasure hunt, you explore the quarry, learn about the stone’s origins, and find your own keepsake. During the polishing day, you shape gemstones you have found yourself—or selected from our collection—into jewelry in the workshop. In every experience, what matters most is the personal journey and the mark of your own hands: a self-made piece of jewelry is the greatest treasure.
