Sights and attractions in the Lappeenranta and Imatra region
South Karelia is filled with interesting attractions, history and rich nature. The blue and white waves, theatre stages, the largest sandcastle in Finland and the Rapids in Imatra entail many fun experiences, both big and small, peaceful and at full speed.
You can explore Lappeenranta’s Old Town, the Fortress, and its museums around the year. The Fortress encompasses the oldest Eastern Orthodox church in Finland and small artisans’ shops. This popular tourist attraction also features a number of events each year.
For centuries, visitors have come to Imatra to see the town’s famous rapids. You can admire the rapids year round, and visit the oldest nature park of Finland, Crown Park 'Kruununpuisto' surrounding the rapids.
Over 200 years old Kärnäkoski fortress located in Savitaipale is an interesting place to visit. The fortress was built in 1793 by a Russian general Aleksandr Suvorov to protect St.Petersburg. Another interesting place to visit is museum of Hakamäki which is located on a lush hill. In Hakamäki you are able to see traditional buildings, products and textiles. In 2008 a 14 meters long observation tower was also built, from where you can see the beautiful scenery towards Lake Kuolimo.
Another interesting place to visit in Savitaipale is Rovastinoja. Visitors are able to admire the prehistoric landscape at Rovastinoja residence, with a turf hut built according to the old model. Rovastinoja is also a rest area on the route of Traces of the Ice Age – Stone Age Man.
